In conjunction with our Net Worth Fisheries exhibit, the replica of the famed Grand Banks fishing schooner BLUENOSE II will be docked and open for tours July 5 thru July 7. A glorious reign as Queen of the North Atlantic began with her launching from Lunenburg’s Smith and Rhuland boatyard on March 26, 1921. It tragically ended a quarter century later. In 1963, Bluenose II was launched from the same shipyard, built by many of the men who had worked on the Original Bluenose. Bluenose II is acknowledged to have the largest working mainsail in the world it measures 4,150 square feet. The total sail area measures over 11,000 square feet and BLUENOSE II is 143 feet in length.

Fishermen's scorn for the fragility of racing schooners and their crews led to the building of Lunenburg's Original Bluenose. Her launching in 1921 would be the birth of her glorious reign as Queen of the North Atlantic. Bluenose represented Nova Scotia's prominence in the fishing industry and international trade. In January, 1946, Bluenose went aground on a reef, near Haiti. She never sailed again. Like a ghost ship, she came back to life in 1963. Bluenose II was built by many of the men who had worked on the original vessel and was launched from the same shipyard. In 1971, the schooner was gifted to the Government of Nova Scotia.
