NEWPORT, R.I.—Rhode Island has a new symbol of its maritime heritage. Gov. Don Carcieri on Wednesday designated the Oliver Hazard Perry as the state’s tall ship during a ceremony at Bowen’s Wharf. The vessel is a three-masted replica of a 19th century warship. It will be operated as a working sail training ship. The ship is named for Newport naval hero Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry.
