Schooner Adventuress Grounded

Tugboats tie on to the schooner Adventuress after it ran aground Monday, at Orcas Island. No injuries were reported when the 95-year-old schooner ran aground at about noon in Wasp Passage in the San Juan Islands while sailing on a school trip. Adventuress grounded near Orcas Island could still make it to this weekend's tall ships festival in Victoria. It's scheduled to be hauled out of the water for a Coast Guard inspection Tuesday at Port Townsend. Divers who took the first look at the hull found no damage. The 95-year-old schooner is operated by the Port Townsend-based Sound Experience nonprofit for maritime and environmental education.

Schooner Sylvina W. Beal Aground

The U.S. Coast Guard station in Eastport, Maine, says it received a report Monday night that the schooner Sylvina W. Beal had run aground near Indian Island in Head Harbor Passage and needed help. No injuries or pollution are reported and the coast guard says the vessel is not taking on water. The cause of the grounding is under investigation.

HMS Beagle Project

In 2009, the bicentenary of Charles Darwin's birth a sailing replica of the original HMS Beagle will be built. The HMS Beagle an icon of scientific progress,will circumnavigate the globe in Darwin's wake, crewed by aspiring scientists and researchers. They will carry out original research both at sea and on land, updating Darwin's observations, breaking new scientific ground and relating the adventure of science to enthuse a new generation of young students. HMS Bounty

Bounty Today
The Bounty was built in 1960 for MGM studios' Mutiny on the Bounty with Marlon Brando.Completely seaworthy and built just the way it would have been 200 years before, the new Bounty was constructed from the original ship's drawings still on file in the British admiralty archives. The HMS Bounty Organization LLC is dedicated to keeping the ship sailing and using her as a vehicle for teaching the nearly lost arts of square rigged sailing and seamanship.
Original Bounty
The British Admiralty purchased a coal carrying merchant ship operating on the coast of England, named Bethia, renamed her Bounty, and re-commissioned her in 1787 for a special mission. Bounty was to sail halfway around the world to the tiny island of Tahiti, collecting sapling breadfruit trees and transport them to the West Indies. Owners of the burgeoning British plantations there needed a cheap source of food for the workers.

HMS Ontario Shipwreck

HMS Ontario Discovered

The HMS Ontario, a British warship built in 1780 has been discovered in deep water off the southern shore of Lake Ontario. In the early evening hours of October 31, 1780, the British sloop of war HMS Ontario sank with over 120 men, women, children and prisoners on board during a sudden and violent gale. The discovery of the HMS Ontario was made in early June utilizing sophisticated side scan sonar technology. The ship was found between Niagara and Rochester, NY in an area of the lake where the depth extends to more than 500 feet. The HMS Ontario is considered to be one of the few "Holy Grail" shipwrecks in the Great Lakes. The shipwreck of the HMS Ontario is still considered to be British Admiralty property. Fishermen's scorn for the fragility of racing schooners and their crews led to the building of Lunenburg's Original Bluenose. Her launching in 1921 would be the birth of her glorious reign as Queen of the North Atlantic. Bluenose represented Nova Scotia's prominence in the fishing industry and international trade. In January, 1946, Bluenose went aground on a reef, near Haiti. She never sailed again. Like a ghost ship, she came back to life in 1963. Bluenose II was built by many of the men who had worked on the original vessel and was launched from the same shipyard. In 1971, the schooner was gifted to the Government of Nova Scotia. In the years since, its role as floating ambassador for the province has been consistent. For the rest of the story Click Here.

Schooner Alice S. Wentworth built 1863 in Norwalk, Connecticut, sailed by Catpain Zeb Tilton from 1921 thur 1942.

Last Four-Masted Schooners

In June of 1932 the four masted schooners HESPER and LUTHER LITTLE were auctioned off and both "laid up" in Wiscasset, Maine ever since. The schooners were in good condition at the time, but the age of sail was near an end and no cargoes could be found. Both schooners were built in Somerset, Massachusetts, LUTHER LITTLE in 1917 at 204 feet and HESPER in 1918 at 210 feet. During a fierce windstorm on Oct. 15, 1995 the remaining rigging and masts totally destroyed what remained of the schooners. The last four-masted schooners in America were gone forever.

HMS VICTORY

HMS Victory was launched in 1765 at Chatham Dockyard and was commissioned in 1778. She continued in active service for the next 34 years which included her most famous moment-the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. In 1812 the Victory was retired from frontline duty and anchored in Portsmouth Harbour, on the south coast of England. For the next 110 years the Victory remained at her moorings in Portsmouth Harbour fulfilling a combination of practical and ceremonial roles. In 1922, amid fears for her continued survival, the Victory was moved into Portsmouth's Royal Naval Dockyard and placed in No2 Dry Dock. Work then began on restoring the Victory to her 'fighting' 1805 condition and continues today. For the rest of the story Click Here.

Sloop CLEARWATER

In 1966, a handful of river-lovers decided to change the course of events that was destroying the Hudson, and reclaim a natural treasure for us all. They wanted to dramatize the rivers plight, recall its history, and help guide its future. They wanted to provide their fellow citizens with a first-hand look at the neglect and pollution of the river, and move them to action. So they built a boat. Launched in 1969, Clearwater is a 106-foot wooden sailing sloop designed after the famous Hudson River sloops of the 9th century, and it serves as a moveable classroom, laboratory, stage, and forum about the Hudson River. Each year, Clearwater accommodates nearly 13,000 children and adults for education sails that teach history, biology, and environmental science and navigation along the Hudson River, New York Harbor and Long Sound.
