The sailing ship SV Concordia, based in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada, sank off the coast of Brazil, all 64 passengers were rescued from rafts Friday. The tall ship went down off the Brazilian coast near Rio de Janeiro while en route to Uruguay, survivors reported that the ship encountered strong winds before it went down.

The ship was originally due to re-open in 2009 but Cutty Sark suffered a major fire on 21 May 2007 which resulted in a 14-month delay on the project and significantly increased costs. Thankfully, due to heroic fire-fighting there was amazingly little damage to the ship’s original material and the Conservation Project can continue as planned. With additional significant financial contributions the Cutty Sark Conservation Project is back on course, due to re-open in 2011.

The Denis Sullivan was launched in 2000, a 137' three-masted, wooden, gaff rigged schooner homeported in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She is a flagship of the state of Wisconsin. The Denis Sullivan design was inspired by the Great Lakes cargo schooners of the 19th century. Like many of those schooners, she carries a raffee, a square-rigged fore topsail which is triangular in shape.

Why is it HMB not HMS Endeavour?
The B stands for Bark. In the 18th century, ships were classified by their hull shape. A ship with a flat bow and square stern was called a bark. If the ship didn't fit any category and its captain's rank was lieutenant, this ship was also classified a bark. Cook himself mostly referred to the original ship as "His Britannick Majesty's Bark".

Between 1930 and 1939 the America's Cup races in Newport were sailed on enormous J-class boats. Sir Thomas Lipton (Lipton Tea) built Shamrock V in 1930 as one of the first of the J-class boats, the hull is wood and the length is 120 ft. overall, when the wind is just right, the sails move the 146 ton sloop up to 12.5 knots. The flag at the top of the mast is 160 ft. above the water (about the height of a 16-story office building). Shamrock V is the only J to have been in continuous commission, since her last refit in 2000, Shamrock V has sailed across the Pacific, attended the America's Cup in New Zealand and is now in the Mediterranean.

The A.J.Meerwald is a Delaware Bay oyster schooner, a distinct vessel that evolved to meet the needs of the local oyster fishery. Launched in 1928, the A.J.Meerwald was one of hundreds of schooners built along South Jersey's Delaware Bayshore before the decline of the shipbuilding industry that coincided with the Great Depression. The celebrated War of 1812 privateer square top sail schooner has arrived from Hawaii & California in Florida and is scheduled for a five-year mission along the East Coast of the United States and Canada to participate in the Great Lakes United Tall Ships Challenge Series during the summer of 2010 and then will remain on the East Coast to participate in the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 and the Star-Spangled Banner. The 114 ton LYNX is an interpretation of a privateer or naval schooner from the War of 1812. She is fitted with period ordnance and flies pennants and flags from the 1812 era the crew wear period dress and operate the ship in keeping with the maritime traditions of early 19th Century America. New England built she was launched on July 28, 2001 in Rockport, Maine.

Schooner Virginia, the 122-foot wooden sailboat built on the waterfront here five years ago, is halting operations because of money problems - at least for now. About 15 people, including the ship's crew and two captains, will be laid off, said Will King, executive director of the Virginia Maritime Heritage Foundation, which owns the ship. ( Read More )

Schooner Roseway

Roseway was built for Harold Hathaway of Taunton, Massachusetts at the John F. James & Son shipyard in Essex. Hathaway's intention was to build a boat which might best the Canadians in the international fisherman's races popular at that time; to that end, Roseway was impeccably maintained and used only occasionally as a fishing boat.
In 1941, Roseway was purchased by the Boston Pilot's Association to serve as a pilot boat for Boston Harbor. Roseway continued to serve as a pilot vessel until the early 1970s, she was then sold and converted into a passenger vessel for the tourist trade. Roseway changed hands several times in the ensuing decades, operating primarily out of Camden, Maine and the US Virgin Islands. In 1997, she was listed as a National Historic Landmark. Roseway in 2002 donated the vessel to the newly founded World Ocean School.

The wreckage of an old sailing ship has surfaced again on the Baldwin County coast, Alabama, and a spokesman for Fort Morgan says it's most likely the three-masted schooner Rachel.
The ship ran aground in the early 1900s, and its most recent reappearance was on the beach six miles east of Fort Morgan after Tropical Storm Ida struck two weeks ago. Mike Bailey, Fort Morgan's events coordinator, says the Rachel was 155 feet long and was one of the largest Biloxi schooners built.
The Mobile Press-Register reports that Bailey says the ship was carrying a load of lumber when it ran into a storm, and ran aground because it was not carrying enough of a crew to handle it. The ship wreckage has reappeared on the beach, usually after storms, for at least 40 years.

Save The CITY OF ADELAIDE

MORE than 60 prominent South Australians have signed an open letter to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, calling on him to save the historic ship City of Adelaide. The group is trying to save the ship, which is the oldest clipper of its type in the world. It is currently sitting on a slipway in Scotland and is at imminent risk of destruction.

The Mystic Seaport Board of Trustees voted and authorized the Museum staff to restore the historic whaling vessel Charles W. Morgan to sailing condition and to plan a ceremonial voyage upon completion of the current multi-million dollar restoration project. The Charles W. Morgan is the oldest commercial sailing vessel in the western world, in pure age, only the USS Constitution, a military vessel, is older.

Fire has destroyed the tall ship PRINS WILLEM, a replica of the 17th-century flagship of the Dutch East India Company in the northern Netherlands. The three-mast tall ship, which was built in the 1980s, in 2003 became a tourist attraction in the northern Dutch port of Den Helder.
The original ship, built in 1649, was the largest ship of the Dutch trading company. It sank in 1662 off Madagascar.

Bluenose II to Visit Maine Maritime Museum , Bath, Maine
In conjunction with our Net Worth Fisheries exhibit, the replica of the famed Grand Banks fishing schooner BLUENOSE II will be docked and open for tours July 5 thru July 7. A glorious reign as Queen of the North Atlantic began with her launching from Lunenburg’s Smith and Rhuland boatyard on March 26, 1921. It tragically ended a quarter century later. In 1963, Bluenose II was launched from the same shipyard, built by many of the men who had worked on the Original Bluenose. Bluenose II is acknowledged to have the largest working mainsail in the world it measures 4,150 square feet. The total sail area measures over 11,000 square feet and BLUENOSE II is 143 feet in length.

The Onrust Project in Rotterdam Junction, NY have recreated a replica of Adriaen Block’s sloop on which he explored the Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts coasts as far as Cape Cod. Based on the voyages of the Onrust, the Dutch would lay claim to parts of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania which they would call New Netherlands.

The historic fishing schooner Ernestina is returning to its home port of New Bedford after a nearly yearlong restoration project.
The 115-year-old vessel will leave the Boothbay Harbor Shipyard in Maine on Tuesday and travel under engine power to Gloucester and Boston, before arriving in New Bedford Harbor on Saturday May 9, 2009, where a welcoming ceremony is planned.
The state-owned vessel spent 11 months in Maine having planking and decking in the bow section of the hull above the waterline replaced. The restoration was funded by $500,000 from a Save America’s Treasures grant, $500,000 from the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, and private donations.
The Ernestina was built in Essex in 1894 as a Grand Banks schooner.

On 7 March 1901, the sail ship Gross Herzogin Elizabeth is launched as German navy school ship. After WWI the instruction start again on board in 1921 until laid up in 1932. Seized in May 1945 by the Royal Navy, she is given to France as war damage compensation, renamed DUCHESSE ANNE and tug to Brest where she is abandonned until 1980. She was saved from scrap by the City of Dunkirk in 1981 and is currently an exhibit at Musee Portuaire Dunkerque

A replica 16th Century junk has sunk off Taiwan, one day short of completing an epic voyage to the United States and back.
The Ming dynasty-style Princess Taiping was trying to prove that China's greatest admiral, Zheng He, could have reached North America 600 years ago.
After surviving several storms during its 10-month voyage, the junk broke in two and sank after it was rammed by a freighter just off Taiwan's coast.
All 11 crew members were rescued after being found adrift on the wreckage.
